The Baranov Museum is dedicated to preserving the culture and history of the Kodiak community, and features thousands of objects and photographs that have been donated. There is an exhibit dedicated to Nellie Erskine, a Kodiak resident who hosted numerous cultural salons and encouraged literacy throughout the town. whereas in another area, you can listen to literary recordings from Kodiak townspeople spanning a variety of careers and lifestyles. Overall, the Museum presents a well-rounded impression of what it means to grow up and live in Kodiak over the years.

The Alutiiq Museum is dedicated to honoring and preserving the culture of the Alutiiq, the native peoples local to Kodiak. Some of the exhibits explore the Alutiiq relationship with nature, such as their use of plants or hunting traditions. Others focus more on their developed culture, with oral histories and archaeological artifacts. The museum is fascinating and excels at educating people about a culture they don’t know much about.

While it’s small, the Kodiak Military History Museum does an excellent job of presenting the Russian and American military history of Alaska. While Kodiak was not an active spot during any military actions, the importance of the outpost never diminished, and the curators of the magazine prove this with displays of the various weapons and resources the Army and the Navy compiled at Kodiak Island.
