Shuyak Island State Park

This state park comprises most of Shuyak Island’s 48,000 acres. The Shuyak Island State Park is part of the iconic Kodiak Archipelago coastal forest system, which has only one tree species: Sitka spruce. Besides being a virgin Sitka Spruce forest, the Shuayk Island State Park includes miles and miles of rugged coastline, protected waterways, and beaches. Camping is allowed in this state park, and groceries and other supplies must be acquired before you arrive on site.

The Shuyak Island State Park has a contact station on Big Bay for possible assistance. Still, it is recommended that camping visitors are as self-sufficient as possible, as assistance could be hours or even days away. The Shuyak Island State Park experience is one of the wilderness. So those who plan their trip to Shuyak carefully can find the best rewards.

Several air charters offer float plane service to the Shuyak Island State Park. Some things to keep in mind once you arrive in Shuyak are:

  • No visitor services are available
  • The Shuyak Island weather is generally cool and moist
  • The Isnland’s temperatures range from 40-60°f, but due to its location, the island is subject to unpredictable weather
  • Sea conditions can deteriorate very quickly: rough seas, large swells, and high winds
  • Rainfall averages about four to six inches per month during summer
  • Bring enough food/snacks for your visit
