Immersed in the embrace of the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge, spanning a vast 2,812 square miles and encompassing two-thirds of Kodiak Island, Larsen Bay is a testament to Mother Nature’s finest work. Here, diverse landscapes unfold, from rugged mountain terrain and alpine meadows to the lush embrace of wetlands, spruce forests, and expansive grasslands.
The refuge hosts spectacular wildlife, none more iconic than the giant Kodiak brown bear. In addition to these majestic creatures, over 200 bird species and 600 breeding pairs of bald eagles call this refuge home. Meanwhile, the surrounding waters teem with marine life, including seals, sea lions, porpoises, sea otters, whales, and whimsical puffins.

Uyak Bay, stretching like a sinuous fjord through Kodiak Island, boasts all five species of Pacific salmon, halibut, and lingcod. Notably, the silver salmon run in August and September is one of Alaska’s finest. Anglers also converge on Larsen Bay to test their skills on the Karluk River, a 22-mile waterway renowned for salmon and steelhead runs, particularly captivating for fly anglers.

Embedded within the scenic landscape is the rich history of the Alutiiq/Sugpiaq people, who have called Uyak home for over 2,000 years. This community gained national attention in 1991 when the Smithsonian Institution returned the remains of 756 Alutiiq/Sugpiaq individuals.
