Kodiak History Museum

Website | 101 E Marine Way Kodiak, AK 99615 | (907) 486-5920

This museum is located in the oldest standing Alaskan building and is filled with artifacts, artwork, and photographs recording Kodiak’s history. It also offers exhibits from King Crabbing to the Alutiiq Natives and daily life in the 1980s up to this day. The Kodiak History Museum focuses on Russian-American history and Kodiak’s early American history.

The museum’s building was constructed by the Russians, who, in the 1700s, used to store otter pelts. This otter fur trade caught the Westerners’ attention in Australia. This building was renovated in the late 1960s, and the museum moved in shortly after.

This History Museum is a community center where residents come together to celebrate Kodiak’s culture through the shares of Kodiak’s stories. In 2019, the museum underwent a permanent exhibit redesign and now features community-driven, collaborative, approachable, and permanent exhibits showcasing Kodiak, Alaska’s history.

The Kodiak History Museum’s mission is to facilitate the exploration and learning of the cultural, natural, and artistic heritage of Kodiak Island and its surrounding communities to create opportunities for visitors to discover and exchange knowledge using the resources and collections made available through the Kodiak History Museum’s operation.
