Kodiak Fisheries Research Center is a 45,937-square-foot multi-agency laboratory building located in Kodiak Island Borough. This unique research center brings together the main fisheries research agencies under the same roof:

  • Alaska Department of Fish and Game
  • Kodiak Regional Agriculture Association
  • National Marine Fisheries Service

The Kodiak Fisheries Research Center opened in 1998 using Exxon-Valdez oil spill settlements funds. It accommodates visiting students and scientists in a separate six-unit dormitory building and also has conference rooms that offer contemporary meeting areas to the general public and tenants.

Kodiak’s ecosystem is rich in marine habitat, commercial fishing resources, scenic beauty, and research opportunities. This center’s primary goal is to enrich public knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of the diverse Kodiak Island Archipelago and the world’s diverse ecosystem by providing an interactive and educational overview of the marine life, wildlife, and commercial fishing resources available.

This center is committed to preserving, managing, and enhancing the North Pacific marine ecosystem and its resources. The Kodiak Fisheries Research Center’s impressive lobby displays local marine life and a 19 feet Cuvier’s beaked whale skeleton on the ceiling. Downstairs you can find kid-friendly touch tanks and a large aquarium.
