Protecting Kodiak Parks: Friends of Kodiak State Parks

The Friends of Kodiak State Parks (FKSP) is a group of people who love and work hard to protect Kodiak’s state parks. Since 1997, they’ve helped take care of these beautiful places so everyone can enjoy them now and in the future.

FKSP teaches people about Kodiak’s nature and history through fun activities like guided hikes, wildlife tours, and hands-on workshops. They also work with schools to bring environmental lessons into the classroom, helping kids learn how to protect nature.

Volunteers play a big part in keeping the parks in great shape. FKSP offers opportunities to help maintain trails, restore habitats, and assist with events. The Adopt-A-Trail program lets families, friends, and groups take care of specific trails, making sure they stay safe and easy to use.

Since FKSP is a nonprofit, it relies on donations and fundraisers to support its projects. One big event is the Kodiak State Parks Benefit Auction, where people bid on cool items to help raise money. FKSP also shares updates on social media to keep everyone informed and involved.

FKSP teams up with other groups to improve park facilities and protect nature. A great example is the new Coho cabin at Pasagshak State Recreation Site, built in 2025 with help from different organizations. These partnerships help make Kodiak’s parks even better.

One of FKSP’s biggest achievements is helping restore Fort Abercrombie State Historical Park, a World War II site. Thanks to their efforts, visitors can explore historic buildings and learn about Kodiak’s role in the war.

In the future, FKSP wants to reach more people with educational programs and use technology to teach about conservation. Keeping trails, habitats, and park facilities in good condition will always be a top priority.

Through teamwork, education, and community support, FKSP helps protect Kodiak’s parks so future generations can enjoy their beauty and history.
