Afognak Island State Park
Afgonak Island is a well-forested landscape surrounded by protected coastal waters. This island is famous for its abundant wildlife, such as elk and brown bears, and is also known as a unique destination for wildlife viewing, fishing, or serene retreats.
For the most part, this island is pure Alaska wilderness; it is home to Kodiak’s brown bear, Roosevelt’s elk, Sitka’s black-tailed deer, gray whales, orcas, humpbacks, mink whales, fin whales, and other marine creatures that populate the surroi¡unding waters, Offshore, seals, sea lions, and sea otters are familiar sights while beaver, river otter, marten, ermine, and fox make their home in the coastal habitats.
Afgonak Island is the second most oversized island in the Kodiak Island Archipelago. It is divided mainly between the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge, various Alaska Native corporations, and Alaska State Parks. This island’s State Park is located northeast of Afgonak Island and totals over 75,000 acres.
The main attraction for visitors is fishing; Afonack Island State Parl has numerous streams and lakes swimming with silver, red, and pink salmon, steelhead rainbow, and Dolly Varden. Offshore saltwater fishing is also great for lingcod, flounder, red snapper, halibut, sea bass, and greenling. And for more relaxed visitors, wildlife viewing, hiking, kayaking, birding, and beachcombing opportunities are also available throughout the park.
